In this scene, the Burnham family is first shown to audiences as a unit during this dinner. At this moment, Lester is discussing is malcontent with his life and how the family is operating. Jane is upset that neither of her parents listen to her, and Carolyn complains that she is not supported by her family as a real estate agent.
This space at first glance seems like a very neat and orderly household. The dining table is set symmetrically with the candlesticks creating diagonal lines toward the roses, and Jane’s face. Jane and the roses in front of her are the only subjects with saturated coloring. Lester and Carolyn are both in the shadows wearing dull grey and blue colors. Because Jane is sitting behind the central light source, the candlesticks, her face is the main focus of this frame. While there are sconces on the wall that also provide light, they are not bright enough that they illuminate the other characters.
This frame places each character in their own “third” of the shot. The edge of the table creates a horizontal line between Carolyn and Lester. The candlesticks frame Jane, and the windows create additional vertical lines.
