My next upcoming project explores two questions, “How has technology provided the body with new postures and gestures?” and “How does technology affect our interpersonal relationships?” The findings of these questions will be presented in a trilogy of dance films. The first film explores new performative gestures created individuals using technology. The second explores the relationship between the change in the interaction between individuals due to the overuse of technology. The third explores the effect of technology on society.
This project was inspired by my interest in combining my interests in technology and dance. Currently, I observed students on campus interacting with each other in different spaces; the dining hall, the library, downtown. I have observed their posture and gestures on themselves and between one another in response to their phones and laptops and those around each other. The content of the video is also inspired by Sherry Turkle’s Alone Together and Reclaiming Conversation. Her writings on the threat of electronic communication on humanity and lack of human empathy in relationships are what inspires many of the themes in the videos.
I have chosen to capture and record this choreography instead of performing it live not only because of my interest in dance and multimedia, but also to emphasize the effect technology has on the arts and how arts can be displayed in different ways.
These videos will be uploaded individually throughout the month of April. Be sure to check back in for updates!
